Noakhali gang-rape: Nation ashamed, says Ctg Range DIG

The incident of gang-rape and torture of a woman in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila has embarrassed the nation, Chattogram Range Deputy Inspector General of Police Anwar Hossain said today.

“There is no word to condemn this incident,” DIG Anwar Hossain said, reports our Noakhali correspondent.

He made the remarks while addressing a police rally against rape and gender violence, held in Begumganj.

The police official said law enforcement agencies should be more vigilant so that such incidents do not happen again.

On September 2, the Noakhali woman was gang-raped but police apparently came to know about the incident after a video of the torture was circulated by the rapists and it went viral.

The incident sparked countrywide protests — forcing the government to incorporate death penalty for rape.

Nearly 95 percent of the people are oppressed by only 5 percent, said the DIG, adding that police have to get close to people. They will have to restore people’s trust through their actions.

Bangladesh Police today held countrywide rallies against rape and all forms of violence against women, with the aim to generate public awareness.

The rallies started at a total of 6,912 police beats across the country, at 10:00am simultaneously, said a press release sent by Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general of Police Headquarters, today.

Civil society representatives, women and child rights activists and students took part in the programmes.

The participants called on all sections of the society for mass awareness to prevent violence against women and children, including rape, and to stand by the abused, added the release.

The programmes were broadcast on Facebook live.
